"Painting is an argument between what it looks like and what it means." - Brett Whiteley
Enfant terrible! Prolific Artist! Avant-Garde!
Brett Whiteley was born in Sydney in 1939 and a trip to Italy in 1960 catapulted his career as an artist. His paintings morphed from abstraction to figuration and his subjects included iconic criminals, zoo animals, his wife Wendy and daughter Arkie and iconic Australia landscapes - most notably Sydney harbour. His style was influenced by Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, Bob Dylan and Arthur Rimbaud. His premature death was a tragedy for the Australian artistic canon but his paintings live on as some of the most recognisable work created on our shores
