Product Description
"The time will come when you may interrupt me" - Gough Whitlam
Sacked PM, Social Democratic Reformer, Political Legend.
Whitlam is an Australian political legend and still to this day sparks passionate debate about his Prime Ministership. Controversially dismissed in 1974, Whitlam remains the only Australian PM to be dismissed by the Governor-General.
During his leadership, the Whitlam Government sought political, economic and social change in Australia, including the end of military conscription, granting independence to Papua New Guinea, free university education, universal health care (which became Medicare), legal aid and started the process of Aboriginal Land Rights by granting the title deeds to the Gurundji people for part of their traditional lands.
For a long time, Whitlam was marred by his dismissal and criticised for the actions of his government. However, as time passes, his government is now seen as planting the seeds for a fairer society we enjoy now.
