Blue Ringed Octopus
"If the oceans die, we die." Captain Paul Watson, Sea Shepard.
The Southern Blue-Ringed Octopus is a small and highly venomous octopus found around the southern coast of Australia.
Octopi have long captured the imagination of people - depicted in many culture's mythologies - most famously the Kraken, a giant octopus from the deep who devours sailors and ships.
They are regarded in most cultures to have high intelligence whether used for evil or as divine creatures.
The Southern Blue Ringed Octopus, although potentially deadly, is actually a calm and quiet octopus, living in small tidal rock pools.
The Southern Blue Ringed Octopus will only show its glowing blue rings if threatened and is defending itself. Drawing on that characteristic, Jess has inverted the colours of the Blue Ringed Octopus to make it luminous blue with gold spots. Also symbolising the urgent need and eminent danger our seas are facing with climate change.
