SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT CHRISTMAS BEETLES

- There are around 36 known type of Christmas Beetles. 
- 35 of them are native to Australia
- They get their name "Christmas Beetle" because the adults come up for air around Christmas. They spend most of the year underground and then emerge during the summer months. 
- Numbers of Christmas Beetles have declined over the past 30 years due to the lost of habitat - from bush fires, deforestation and floods. 
- Majority of Christmas Beetles are various shades of brown and gold. However, there are a range of beetles that are jewel like with metallic, shimmering exteriors, almost like the Australian gemstone, opal. 
- They love eucalyptus leaves to munch on, however, they can also cause a severe leave loss to young eucalyptus trees. 
-  In some Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, Christmas beetles are seen as messengers from the spirit world. They are believed to carry the souls of ancestors and bring messages of guidance and wisdom to the living.
- Some believe Christmas Beetles are good luck charms, bringing good fortune and prosperity. They can also be positive indicators of a healthy environment 
- The Christmas Beetle is related to the Rhinoceros and Scarab Beetles. 
In Ancient Egypt, Scarab Beetles were a symbol of rebirth or resurrection, good luck and fortune.
